Colin McEnroe Show: Are Wild Mountain Lions Back In Connecticut?

original post

Most people want to believe there’s a breeding population of mountain lions spreading through parts of Connecticut and into New York’s Hudson Valley.

People root for this to be the case. We want to believe that where we live is not completely tame – that there’s a whiff of wildness and mystery to boring old Connecticut. And what could be wilder and more mysterious than mountain lions?

If you’re a Connecticut mountain lion believer, you’re not alone. I’ve been poking around, off and on, for more than a decade, and it’s pretty easy to find people who think they’ve seen a cougar in Winsted or Litchfield.

In the past two weeks, mountain lion fever reached a new high. People saw a mountain lion in Greenwich. Then a motorist hit and killed one in Milford. Escaped pets? A native population? a Hybrid of the two?

  1. I had a young mt lion walk briskly across taconik parkway this morning in front of me. Thought Fox, then bobcat, then as I got close it was no doubt a young mt lion. Short yellow hair and long tail and the face was skinny and flat almost like a cheetah. Seemed to be a young one. Very cool. I have farm in Ghent so regulary see fox, coyotes and have seen a few bobcats so it was clear what I saw.

  2. My husband and I spotted a mountain lion near the women’s tee on the second hole at Copper Hill golf course in East Granby yesterday May 29, 2017. My husband teed off and I started to walk over to the women’s tee when I saw it. It’s tail was cut short..maybe an accident..it was large ..75 lbs or more..very muscular. We skipped the rest of that hole and drove quiet to the 4th hole. When I looked back, the big kitty was sniffing the tee where my husband had just teed off. We called the proshop shop and later we called east granby police and the DEP. Carol Hopkins
    Wow!

Wow! Sorry. 3rd hole at Copper Hill GC

    1. Not a bobcat. Larger. Shorter hair
Did not have the pointed ears. We thought it was a bobcat st first but knew it was bigger. We called others familiar with bobcats.
