Colchester Residents : Assist our Research
We have received multiple recent reports of sightings in the greater Lake Hayward four corners area and Balaban Rd area . You can assist our research by being vigilant with a camera ready, and enlist your neighbors to be ready with cameras in the event of a sighting.
Most sighting reporters are so surprised at what they are seeing, they are not able to react quickly enough to obtain a pnoto. Carry an awareness with you and know how to quickly use your cell pnone camera in the event you make a sighting. We really need photographic evidence!
Email, text, or call any pnotos or sightings to Bo Ottmann: cougarsofthevalley@hotmail.com (860) 324-3174
Many Thanks,
Bo Ottmann and the COV Team

Great initiative! I will spread the word to family,
friends and neighbors who have seen or hope to
see these magnificant mountain lions.
Good luck with the fundraising- it’s a great cause!

Great work all! I unfortunately don’t have much money to donate like I wish, as I am recently un-employed due to down sizing, however…what I can offer is my time & skills. I have spent countless hours in the woods of Ct. And I am very familiar with tracking and wild life observation. I spent 7 years in the U.S.Army Special Forces and my bush skills were taught to me by the best in the world. I found Mountain Lion tracks North of Kent @ 15 years ago, and when I reported it to the Ct. DEP, I was assured that I was mistaken, as they are not indigenous here in Ct. Guess it’s time they concede the fact that they are here. Anyway, I would like to volunteer my services if you need some man power out in the field. I come complete with all my own gear, sans the cameras. Lived in Ct. All my life and I’m very familiar with the terrain, flora, and fauna. Please let me know, and keep up the great research!

I would like to mount a camera in the woods at my home which is adjacent to the Algonquin Forest. Could you recommend a camera?
Thanks.

I’m thinking of mounting a few cameras (I’ll add as I can afford to) behind my camp which is adjacent to Mohegan State Forest in Scotland CT. Does anyone have advice on the best camera for the money and any advice on set up, things you’ve learned to do and not do.. that kind of thing?

I can recommend the bushnell trophy cam. Very durable and easy to use. Long lasting batteries. I have had mine for almost 3 years now with no issues. If you want to check out a good site I would order from these guys as they also review all the cameras and have great service.

As far as cost I spent about 170 on the trophy cam but hear all kinds of bad things about the 50 dollar ones so I guess you get what you pay for with these things. As far as advice on use just make sure you have it set at the right sensitivity and use a decent camera card. Also the highest resolution is not always the best especially for night photos.

Right on with the cheaper cams, dont waste your money. Best to use VIDEO though, since sometimes you will miss the animal if you just snap a picture.

I got the bushnell and put it on the side of my house (where my dogs won’t activate it). Works great….still on the original batteries after about 5 months. Right about still pics vs video….for some reason, still pics can miss whats there….as if the sensor time takes longer than the animal is in the frame.
But I did get a coyote, a few foxes, a possum, some racoons and of course many deer. Fun to check and see whats out there at night! Really want to capture a bobcat pic. Or a Mtn Lion, I can dream! (I have been face to face with a Mtn Lion in 1993 in the woods in CT, we were five feet apart…… thats what brings me to the site)

I live on the the west side of the peoples state forest and have had a number of different “big cats”, but have scared them before I could get a pic or got really bad pic. There is a “deer highway to my yard for the berries I think. You are more than welcome to put cameras up on my property if you like, I have chickens and it attracts them.

Witnessed a large long legged bob tailed cat (around 80 pounds) moving though woods from south to north in the vicinity of Windham Ave., Colchester around 7:15 Tuesday May 14, 2013. Have seen Fisher cats and Bob cats but this was definitely larger. Amazing!
