I live in southbury, CT. I started my walk around 05:30AM this moring (7/30/2016). I took a right from west flat hill road to purchase brook rd before reaching the stillson road.I saw a big black animal at the corner of the road. I just stood frozen. It looked like a big black animal. Then when it crossed the road I could see the long black tail close to the floor curving up. It looked like a black panther. Submitted by: Sangeetham Mathi
When me and my parents were driving to Mohegan Sun on Friday July 22nd we believe we saw a dead mountain lion on the side of the highway. We were heading north on 395. I couldn’t get my father to pull over to check it out. Did anyone else see this ? Submitted by Chris
I began hiking up the Lebanon Commons trail in Lebanon, Ct about 7:15 pm on July 23, a saturday. I was in search of edible mushrooms.
The trail crosses CL&P land and goes directly under some high voltage power lines. Some folks have built a fire pit on a rocky miss covered knoll to one side of the cleared area next to the power lines. The trail leads directly to this allowing a spectacular view down a large hill framing an idyllic farm on Route 87. This view is generally to the south east– not an extraneous detail as the prevailing wind is from the northwest.
I began ambling down the knoll to walk down the CL&P access road which connects to another leg of the trail, really just Old Shalk Rd. Before taking too many steps I noticed movement on the access rd, a mountain lion!! Holy smokes! It was strolling lazily just about 40 yards from me further down the access rd- to the south and hence downwind from me. It never saw me but I sure saw it. Needless to say I decided to head back the way I came. It seemed to me as though it was not a fully grown adult mountain lion but certainly on its way. This observation, although I’m not mountain lion age expert, set me on edge suspecting there might be a mother lion somewhere about. Submitted by Oliver Hoadley
A fake mountain lion picture post was put on facebook by a William Guilfoyle and is making the rounds.
It contains a picture of a mountain lion taken at the Saguaro-Juniper reserve in California.
The link to the original 2003 picture is here: http://www.saguaro-juniper.com/i_and_i/mammals/mountain_lion/mountain_lion.html
I saw what looked like a mountain lion this morning in East Windsor Ct. He was rolling around in the grass outside my bedroom window at about 5:15am this morning (July 8, 2016). He was about 3 feet tall at the top of the head and had a tail about 3 feet long. he was medium brown in color and didn’t have any other color except for the black tip at the end of his tail. I would estimate his weight to be around 40-50 pounds. I tried to take a picture of him but when I opened the window I startled him and he trotted away along the tree line. when he was about 100 yards away he looked back in my direction and slowly disappeared into the trees. Three of my neighbors came outside and heard it as well we were all looking around with our flashlights and thought maybe it was after my neighbors chicken coop they have around 20 hens! I said did you hear that and we all said yes and I states was that a fox and neighbors said no way! It was a mt lion it was loud and screaming I heard it from inside over central air conditioning and it sounded like a chikd screaming in pain non stop not like a fox where as the fox screams then pauses in between this was non stop louder as well. Another picture making the rounds on facebook is from Webster, MA. Its a picture of a picture, but some detail is visible. The person zoomed the image in and it looks like, well, a cat. Problem is there is no size reference. We have spoken to animal control some of the witnesses. They all say it was a large cat. (NOT housecat) After doing so, we feel a cone or known sized object has to be placed at the site and a comparison done. We did initially think this was a housecat, but after some investigation, that seems to be unlikely! Five witnesses all reported this to be at least the size of a german shepard.
Tuesday, June 28 2016 at approx 2:50 pm I saw a mountain lion crossing Old New London Rd. Near Darling Rd. The cat was at least as tall at the shoulder as my Labrador Retriever but longer. It had a long tail and was tawny in color. No spots or patterns to the coat. It walked at a moderate pace, was not running or hiding. Essentially came out of the woods on one side of the road and walked up into the hilly, wooded area on the other side of the road. Submitted by Cynthia Holle
A picture is circulating of a mountain lion, that is allegedly from Dayville, CT. Elaine Walmsley is one of the people posting it on facebook.
The picure is actually one of a series taken last year in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
You can view the pictures at this link:
Posting hoax pictures like this reduces the credibility of people reporting legitimate sightings.
Large solid tan cat with long tail spotted by my two sons and myself on a trail in the woods behind our house at 7:30 am. 6/26/16, Scotland, CT. It walked within 20 yards in front of us, approx. 2.5 ft tall, maybe 40 lbs or so. Swampy area and pond, between corn and wheat fields. After we saw it, we heard a deer huffing in the woods and a fawn ran around our yard, very disoriented, and then ran off alone in the opposite direction. I’ve seen bobcats around here before, this animal was much larger and had a long tail and solid fur color. Submitted by: Roger
I was riding my bike on Bates Pond Road in Canterbury around 11 am (6/22/2016) when a large cat walked out in front of me. I have seen bobcat and coyote definitely not either. Smooth tan fur, long tail and black fur around the face. Quick estimate is of a 40-45 lb. cat maybe 2′ tall by 3′ long not including the tail. He walked out, turned his head and we locked eyes, then he was gone, leapt back into the woods without a sound. Coolest wildlife encounter ever. Submitted by David Fournier
About 8:30pm – 9pm on June 6/14/2016 my husband and I spotted what we think might have been a cougar/mountain lion walking on the edge of a freshly cut hay field by the back of our house (we are located on Rt 89). The cat was large, beige with a long tail that looked like it had rings on it. It was too far away to get a picture, but we were able to get a decent view of it using our binoculars. It pounced in and out of some of the tall grass which was left and at some points looked like it was staking something on the edge of the woods that boarder the field. Submitted by: Amy Celli
Around 12:15 am(6/17/201) we heard a screaming sound and looked out the window in our cul de sac to see a very large cat (looked black, but hard to tell) running through neighboring yards and across the street. Moving very fast and trailed by a second smaller animal, maybe a fox? We looked up the sounds made by bobcats and mountain lions and it sounded more like a mountain lion — eerie screaming (almost human). It appeared to have a long tail, so we don’t think it was a bobcat.
The location was Carriage Way in Windsor, CT. Submitted by Bridget McManus
Over the last decade or so, a number of highly credible sightings of cougars have been made in Nova Scotia.
(Like Southern New England). The usual tirade of negativism flowed, saying if they were there, there would be
evidence. People would get pictures, and they would be hit by cars. Well, Michigan has already proven that cougars
can indeed hide and not be seen when the numbers are small. Now it looks like Nova Scotia is joining Michigan.
The cougar naysayers will tell you “its an escaped pet”, of course without any evidence. Like the cat hit in Milford CT.
But the fact is, when people look real hard, and set up these unique hair catching devices, they find cougar sign! Right
under everyone’s nose! CBC Canada article on Nova Scotia:
After this same scenario played out in Michigan, then Ontario, then Quebec, and Tennessee, etc, now you can plainly see.
They can hide RIGHT UNDER everyone’s nose. Evidence is scarce and takes time. Keep posting!
Driving to work at 11:30 PM on Tuesday, June 7th (2016) saw acougare chasing a deer by the section of rt 89 near Perry Hill Rd. Submitted by Timothy Rhodes
On Tuesday, June 7, 2016 I saw a mountain lion walking across on the strip of land behind building 20 of the Fairways in Torrington at approximately 3pm. I saw it through my office window – 144 Spyglass Court. I ran to get my phone, and by the time I found it the mountain lion was gone. I did not feel safe to go outside and look to see if I could find it.
It was full grown…about 3 to 4 times the size of a German Shepherd. The coloring was the same brown shade of a lion…no spots. I don’t remember any details about the tail. I’m guessing it went into the nearby woods. I will notify the condo property management. Let me know if you need more info. Submitted by Roseanne Dennerlein
I saw a cougar cross Center Road in Easton tonight(6/7/2016) at @8 pm. It was tan with a black tale and was bigger than and shaped entirely different from a bobcat which I have also seen recently in Easton. It crossed Center Road just east of Griesers store by the small river at the bottom the hill before reaching the library area. It was sort of running in stalking big cat like motion. It looked low to the ground when running like it was running but not terribly fast and in very big cat kind of way. It looked like a young cougar and was not huge. Submitted by Dan Lent
I was driving home from a friends at 11:00pm June, 3rd when I noticed a very large cat-line creature pricing around the road. This sparked my interest because I have never seen a cat this large anywhere expect a zoo. It had a smaller head, with a lean body, and strong, beefy legs. It walked around with ease and confidence. I tried to snap a picture of the animal and then when It came right next to my vehicle, I felt strange the cat wasn’t afraid of me at all, but was nearly checking me out as well. Then I continued my drive home, and after more research can certainly conclude it was a mountain lion living near the beaches of Short Beach in Branford Ct, off of Short Beach Rd.
