Fungus hunting

I began hiking up the Lebanon Commons trail in Lebanon, Ct about 7:15 pm on July 23, a saturday. I was in search of edible mushrooms.
The trail crosses CL&P; land and goes directly under some high voltage power lines. Some folks have built a fire pit on a rocky miss covered knoll to one side of the cleared area next to the power lines. The trail leads directly to this allowing a spectacular view down a large hill framing an idyllic farm on Route 87. This view is generally to the south east-- not an extraneous detail as the prevailing wind is from the northwest.
I began ambling down the knoll to walk down the CL&P; access road which connects to another leg of the trail, really just Old Shalk Rd. Before taking too many steps I noticed movement on the access rd, a mountain lion!! Holy smokes! It was strolling lazily just about 40 yards from me further down the access rd- to the south and hence downwind from me. It never saw me but I sure saw it. Needless to say I decided to head back the way I came. It seemed to me as though it was not a fully grown adult mountain lion but certainly on its way. This observation, although I'm not mountain lion age expert, set me on edge suspecting there might be a mother lion somewhere about. Submitted by Oliver Hoadley
