Roadkill in Preston
I came across this site looking for news or posting re the following. I was returning to my home in NH on Sunday 24th of June and, passing through Preston, came to stopped traffic on Rte 164, north of 165 and south of Burton Rd. on a downhill stretch (northbound) just prior to a disused farm. The first vehicle looked like some official truck with flashing yellow lights on the roof and as I passed I saw two men were approaching an apparantly dead, very large cat (much much larger than the bobcats that pester my chickens), with a head nearly the size of a basketball and a long thick tail. The animal looked at least 150 lbs. I can't help thinking "cougar" - which is incidently reported to be sighted around my parts in southern NH - though I have not seen one. There was a lot of blood on the road. I am looking for a confirmation or news of this roadkill.

I can verify that there are cougars in southern NH as I have seen one in Marlow, NH, and so have many of my friends and neighbors! As for dead cougars, there was talk of one in Lebanon, NH on http://nhmountainlion.wordpress.com/about/ . Check it out. Two people mentioned it and one was very similar to yours with the blood all over the road (June 18, 2012).

It seems that I failed to be explicit enough about the location; Preston is in CT, near Norwich.
I know that there are cougar in NH - though I have not seen one myself.
I expected to see something of this in a local paper (Norwich Bulletin or New London Day) but have not. Oh well.

I live in Griswold CT, near Preston, I know of several people who have spoted cougars recently. One was spotted in the same area last year. Nothing in the paper and the CT DEP wont acknowlege it.

We live about 2 miles or less from that location. Our neighbors spotted one maybe a week or two before the 24th of June.

I saw a mountain Lion on Terry Rd. in Griswold, Ct on June 27,2012 @ 6 pm. There has also been several sightings by other neighbors, similar to this same cat. DEEP, being their typical bureaucrat, deny the sightings. There was one killed last year in Milford Ct. No Scat, No fur, No bones & then all of a sudden a Road Kill with DNA evidence confirming that it was a cat from North Dakota.

So that is a different cat after the June 24 roadkill date…..What does that say about their territory?

My wife and daughter saw a large brown cat with a long tail jump from our driveway into the woods. We live on Terry Rd. in Griswold Ct. This is the 4th sighting of a mountain lion entering this area of woods. I am going to report sighting to the DEP. I dont know the laws on what to do about this but I do know this cat was where my 6 year old daughter use to ride her bike. If DEP does nothing as usual, I will.

I would just advise not mentioning anything you may or may not have done. There are a lot of people including in the DEEP that care more for these beasts than your daughter. I read this year about someone who paid $10,000 rather than fight after killing a bear that chased his kids. This was not in CT.
