Wilton, CT sighting
Last year I heard Bill Betty speak at the Darien Nature Center. I haven't thought about pumas much since I no longer have a gimpy 3-legged dog to let out at night. A couple days ago, about 4:30 pm I saw a mountain lion sprinting up the street in front of my house. Houses here are on 2 acre lots, hilly and heavily wooded with lots of underbrush, mainly burning bushes. There is a brook at the bottom of my street that runs all year. We have a good amount of crusty snow on the ground so certainly the road was easier to travel than the woods. We also have a group of 7 deer that travel our yard almost every day. My brain thought I was seeing a large greyhound but I knew that wasn't correct. The animal stopped at the top of my neighbors driveway, turned and looked back towards me then continued down their drive and out of sight. I have to wonder if it could hear our umbrella cockatoo squawking- it is ear-piercing and can definitely be heard at the street. The puma was tawny colored, lean looking. I have no idea how to estimate the weight, the tail was very long, and wow it was fast! Unfortunately I only have a picture in my mind, one I will definitely treasure. Submitted by: Jenny Orr
