Cougar tracks and attack on elderly horse
Columbia, CT
On Thanksgiving evening, "something" attacked and chased my two mares, one of whom was 25 years old, through two strands of electrical fence plus two strands of braided wire. My elderly mare had large claw type wounds on both of her hips and her blanket was literally shredded. Unfortuantely, both horses ran straight into traffic and my elderly mare was struck (I still don't know how someone missed a giant horse in a pink blanket in a 35 m.p.h zone). My elderly mare survived the attack and the car hit, only to lay down some 4 hours later and pass away. I guess it was just too much for her.
The next day, cougar tracks were found all over my pasture leading back into the woods and forest behind my house, and animal control stated that a cougar had been sighted in the area. At this point in time, it still has not been captured.

I would suggest locking the other mare up, if possible, and buy yourself a trail camera. They sell them at Cabela’s and they are pretty affordable. We had a ML in our neighborhood a month ago, but the horses were never disturbed.

Where is a police report on the horse hit by the car? Report from ACO?

I have idea. There were several sheriffs, an ambulance and a fire truck all at the scene. My information was taken down, but I have not sought a report-I’ve been too busy grieving my horse. I did give all of the information to town officials, as well, if that helps.

I am so sorry for your loss. Since the sighting on my property in Canton CT on Thanksgiving evening, I have been going out with my dog every single morning. There is no way I will let her out alone again.

Dear all,
I have not replied to questions nor have I dug up a police report for y’all because I personally am suffering kidney failure on top of dealing with the death of my horse and now a lawsuit by the person who hit my horse. My hands are rather full at the moment.
I no longer let my dogs and cats out at night alone, but my boys and I now go out at least three times during each night (with the dogs) to make noise and hopefully scare anything that might be out there away from my lone horse. Needless to say, I (and my kids) have not gotten a good nights sleep since this happened. My youngest now has nightmares, and I have woken up screaming twice.
So while I understand this might be a hobby to some of you (tracking cougars, that is), it is a very real nightmare to me. My purpose on posting on this sight was to warn others to watch their animals and kids. I have no interest in fielding 20 questions from 20 different people about a night that I would rather forget. You’ll have to forgive me.
I will provide my email to the people running this site so they can come take a look. I have provided reports to the city officials and state officials who have contacted me. Other than that, I would ask that everyone take my posting for what it is—a heart wrenching warning that these animals are very dangerous and they are very much here in Connecticut-and leave me be to deal with my health, my grief, and now a lawsuit.

I believe you Kimberly, and I am truly sorry for your loss as well as your health and legal problems.
I have seen a mountain lion WITH TWO CUBS on the side of the road in a relatively populated area of Dutchess County, NY. They are here. I am very excited by this, but realize what it can mean not only for people, but livestock and pets also.
Ignore those that insinuate that you are not truthful. Maybe someday they too will see a cat.
