Near midnight on 9/12/10 I heard a loud animal cry. I ran out grabbing my flashlight and find a Heron wings out and squawking in the tributary stream of Candlewood Lake in New Fairfield CT. I pan the light and see a large solid tan cat (larger than my 75 pound dog) stalking the Heron.
I yelled at the cat and he ran. A few minutes later it starts again. I went outside and got an even better look at the cat. It was definitely all tan, sleek hair, long tail. What I didn’t see was the distinguishing facial markings from the distance and angle I was at. There are foot prints in the river bank. The cat is beautiful and so is the Heron, so I save my resident bird friend and chased the cat away. Its unfortunate, because I would love to see the mountain lion as regularly as I see the Heron. My yard is a magnificent attraction to many animals and I am grateful to see the varied wildlife on a regular basis.
