Mountain Lion in Canton, CT
Tonight at 7:25 while my husband and I were taking a walk along the rails to trails path in Canton On the stretch between Canton Springs Firehouse heading towards Collinsville center, we encountered a mountain lion. We both heard leaves crunching in the woods and I turned to look and about 80 feet from us, a mountain lion was walking parallel to the path in the woods watching us. I was very afraid and my husband tried to look around to see it, but because of my fear, I wanted to immediately get out of there. We left the trail and walked at a rapid pace through the Canton Hollow condos. We have seen bobcats, bears, coy dogs, etc. but this was the first time we ever encountered a mountain lion. What an evening walk. As far as describing the animal, all I could see was the big round light brown head with cat eyes staring at us. I saw the light brown body but did not see the tail. It did nothing but continue to walk parallel to the path through the woods. Submitted by Laurie Knotowicz

During the winter of 2014-15 I regularly found tracks in the snow in an area near Ellsworth Lane in Canton where rabbits wintered. The tracks I measured were seven inches long and four inches wide and the stride of this unknown animal were huge. The tracks were as big as my hand. I checked the internet to compare what I found in the snow. Only one explanation for this-cougar.

Today, 4Aug15 at 12:38pm at base of Sunrise Drive in Canton spotted a very tall deer with no rack and alot of bulk flying and high stepping into tall grass at side of road for approx 2-3 seconds, disappearing into forest, heading in direction of nearby lake off of Pond Road with a nimble big cat in pursuit.
