On Saturday night, March 5, 2016, at about 11:30 p.m., I was driving on Pocono Road, a windy road in the woods on my way home, when I spotted what I assumed was a bobcat crossing the road directly in front of me. I'd never seen a bobcat, but knew from others that they wandered our neighborhood. My high beams were on, and I got a good look at this large, beautiful sandy colored cat that looked right back at me - very sleek with rounded ears, a beautiful cat face and a long cat tail. I watched this feline meander up a hill until it disappeared into the darkness. When I told a friend about it a week or so later, she asked if it had specific bobcat features, i.e., the "Silvester" look, ears, color, tail, etc., and I kept giving the wrong answers, I guess, because she then showed me a photo on her iPad and asked if that was what I saw, and I instantly recognized it and said "YEAH, THATS IT," to which she replied, "that's a mountain lion." What I saw that night was a beautiful mountain lion, I don't believe full grown - its back was probably hip height to my 5'6" frame; it had a beautiful cat face with those high cheekbones, rounded ears, short-haired sandy color fur, and a long cat tail. I now wish I'd known how rare it is to see one of these, and wish I'd had the sense to pull out my phone and videotape it - it was there long enough for me to not only photograph it but even videotape it, but I was so caught up in the moment that I didn't even think to do either! People say that we don't have mountain lions in Connecticut, and I understand that the DEEP will not acknowledge the existence of mountain lions in our state without photographic evidence. But I can assure you that what I saw at 11:30 that Saturday night was 1,000% mountain lion. Submitted by Maggie Moller

The DEP Cannot Be Wrong!The DEP says there are no mountain lions in Connecticut. End of story. If a mountain lion ate the Commissioner of DEP on the New Haven Green on national television the DEP would say there are no mountain lions in Connecticut. Please stop sending in those annoying photographs, paw prints, hair and scat samples, and the occasional highway fatality. They are merely annoyances. The DEP says so.

Charles, that’s a ridiculous claim. Mountain lions are relatively common out west, and are very close to human population. There is no issue with them mauling children, or any humans for that matter. Attacks are extremely rare, and usually because someone corners one. Bears and dogs cause far more injuries and death per capita than mountain lions. People need to be educated and fear what really needs fearing. There are people actively trying to follow mountain lions for research that will tell you, they avoid any human contact at all cost. They are wild, yes, and need to be left alone like any other wild animal.

Stop!
A quick search reveals 2 children stalked and attacked by a mt lion.
Another man apparently “cornered” one while sleeping in his sleeping bag.
Two mountain bikers attacked while riding a trail. Pounced on from behind!!!
Must have cornered it, riding backwards!!!
They are rare. For sure.
But dont listen to this person.
I lived out west, and you dang sure were aware enough to know your surroundings. Because of mt lions!!!
So WTH is this person talking about????
They are stealth hunters. That means, they stalk their pray.
You are not cornering a mt lion without hunting dogs.
This claim is ridiculous.
If it wants to leave, it will, and you won’t know it was there.
If it wants to hunt, it will, and you won’t know it’s there.
Especially if we’re told they don’t exist here!!
And by the way, yes dogs, bears and mt lions are all dangerous!
But again, we’re told the mt lion isn’t even here.
It is.
And that’s the issue.
Its safety, is being prioritized over humans.
Charles is completely, and absolutely right.
It can, will, and has attacked completely unsuspecting children.

Stay alert if you’re in the woods.
Do research.
Do what they tell you to do in the west.
You know, where it’s not an issue according to some.
Look up!
They love trees.
They also take the high ground for stalking if they can.
Carry a large stick.
Carry spray.
Cats nose is very sensitive.
Or legally arm yourself.
Nobody is saying panic.
Just be aware that these predators are here.
Not many yet.
But you encounter one, you won’t forget it.
I’m in the woods every day.
Not a day I don’t keep an eye out.
You know, in case I “corner” one!!
